02月03日 21時 My niece (14) and nephew (16) came to stay in Shikoku with us for 5 weeks during their summer holidays. Before they came we planned homestays, Japanese lessons, day-trips, volleyball training, a christmas party and a 6 day Kansai trip over New years. Five very kind families in our city hosted them together or individually. They were able to experience a very genuine Japanese experience, learn about the culture and improved their Japanese skills immensely. The homestay families tried their best to show Adam and Ruby a good time in Japan and took them to many nice places. They went to onsens, castles, temples, shopping in the big cities, sightseeing at Naoshima art island and Ritsurinkoen botanical gardens. Our day-trips included travelling to many interesting areas around the Shikoku and Chugoku regions. We visited Miyajima and the peace park in Hiroshima. The Kazurabashi vine bridge (Dec 23) was a highlight due to the ice forming in puddles surrounding the river beneath. We were able to pick up the sheets of ice that had formed and had great fun breaking it in numerous ways and taking photos of the moment of impact. The river there is beautiful and in winter the low water level allows you to walk around and explore, however still not low enough to cross the river easily. Our 6 day trip over the New Years Holiday included a lot of driving which allowed us to see many sites in Wakayama, Nara, Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto (Kansai region). We started at the world heritage area Koya-san (Dec 29) and our timing was impeccable. Everything there was covered in fresh snow making it very photogenic and beautiful. Afterwards we continued to Shirahama onsen where our night didn't go so well. Our restaurant choice was poor and the accommodation not the most comfortable. However the next day made up for it. We started the day with a outdoor hotspa just overlooking the ocean which you could nearly touch (Saki no yu). The beachside cafe's pancakes hit the spot and we saw some very pictureque places including senjoujiki (a large rock outcrop ripe for exploring / climbing / fishing / scenery).Next stop was Kyoto which would become our base for the remainder of the trip. Highlights included New Years Eve where we walked through the hundreds of red "torii" gates of Fushiminari shrine. Lining up for 2.5 hrs at Chion-in Temple to see the joyanokane (ringing of the biggest bell in Japan). Walking "nene no michi" street to Kiyomizu temple trying the many free samples on offer from hundreds of stalls / shops. Unfortunately my nephew was bedridden from a suspected bout of norovirus on New year's day. He was able to join in the next day but didn't completely recover until after our trip finished. One day took us on a long drive to Nara prefecture to see Biyoudo-in temple and Ishinobutai (a Kings coffin, resembling stone-henge in the way that it's a mystery how they constructed it using massive boulders). The final day-trips included snowboarding at Mt Daisen and cycling across a few bridges of the Shimanami Highway which links Shikoku to Hiroshima. We were blessed with great weather on both days and good skiing and riding conditions. On our bike ride we bush-whacked to a isolated beach and enjoyed our lunch in the picturesque Seto Inland Sea. Perhaps this ranked up there with our highlights as getting to the beach was an unknown, there was no path but we navigated our way down between cliffs successfully.Despite the cultural differences including new strange foods and communication challenges they had a great time. Thankyou to the homestay families, friends and students who helped out and made it an experience we will always remember.DSCF04072.jpg
